Spreading new hope for Palestine

Malika OmarMany of us witness the plight of children across the world in the news and think to ourselves, "If only there was something I could do". However, more often than not, we switch the channel over and push what our eyes have just seen to one side.

For South African pianist Malika Omar, however, this was not the case. The 26-year-old musician was so moved by the work of one charity, The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), that she decided to put pen to paper and music to tape in order to release a charity single in aid of the organisation, which helps needy children in Palestine and all across the Middle East by locating free medical care and specialised treatment in their homeland.

Omar explains, “I'd heard about the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and its inspiring CEO and President, Steve Sosebee, through friends of mine. Upon research I was very impressed with the non-political, non-religious organisation's work to assist and aid children who are struggling amidst the humanitarian and medical crises in the region by providing and organising medical treatment and healthcare that would be otherwise unavailable to them.

Being a musician, the most obvious way for Omar to help was by doing what she does best. So, following the release of her album Sand Star earlier this year, she began work on the single for the PCRF, entitled New Hope. Omar says, "I personally felt I wanted to do something to support and raise awareness for the PCRF and challenged myself to write lyrics and sing for the first time. Thus New Hope was born. I personally find music a very honest way of getting feelings across; not only a wonderful way to shine a spotlight on an amazing cause. I wrote the lyrics from the perspective of someone showing support for someone else - whether it's us in support of these children in need, or even to show support to a friend or loved one."

With 60 per cent of all download proceeds going to the PCRF and their efforts at helping children in need, Omar is hopeful that the song she has penned will inspire people to help out however they can, even just by downloading the single. She explains, "New Hope is available on international download site CD Baby, as well as iTunes stores across the world, Amazon mp3, and other popular digital download stores. My dream is that everyone who hears the song is uplifted by its message and, whenever they hear it, they're also reminded of their contribution to such a worthy cause and playing a part in helping these little angels. By spreading New Hope - literally - we can together help fund PCRF projects that will aid even more kids in the Palestine region."
