Fun and fitness on tap

Finding new ways to keep fit, socialise and have fun all at the same time can often be tricky. Within the maze of courses on offer around the city, many people end up cajoled into whichever class their work colleagues are raving about, even if, perhaps, it is not the right choice for them.

For those who still haven't found their "thing" yet, perhaps the new term of Dubomedy's tap dance and body percussion class may be the answer. As well as wanting to get fit and keep healthy, many adults will admit to wishing they could dance. They may have been to see shows such as Stomp or Lord of the Dance and envied the swift footwork and captivating rhythm of the performers on stage, leaving the theatre with thoughts of "I wish I could do that". Or perhaps, as a child, they were destined to be the next Michael Flatley, but never quite had the commitment to continue dancing into adulthood. Whatever the reason may be, dance is considered one of the most enjoyable pastimes by many residents of our city and the world over.

While salsa, street dance and ballet often take precedence in the list of dance classes available to adults, more people are discovering - or rediscovering in many cases - the benefits of tap dancing, which can burn up to 315 calories per hour. Not only does it work up a sweat, but the precision and control used to perform the steps required will get you using muscles you had forgotten even existed. And while tap dancing is also proven to increase cardiovascular endurance, coordination, flexibility, agility and stability, most people will keep going back for the sheer enjoyment of stomping around to their heart's content, enjoying the music, making noise and having a laugh.

Alongside the regular classes, Dubai tap dance and body percussion is also the home of the only professional tap and body beats troupe in the UAE, Dubomedy Sole Steppers. As well as offering entertainment and choreography for events, training for the community and team building for the corporate realm, the group also perform at numerous charity events, hold rhythm workshops for children and adults with special needs, and are currently getting ready to launch free on-going rhythm and body percussion training for the visually impaired.

But, for the average workshop attendee, meeting new friends and using the entire body to create infectious beats and routines is what it's all about. So, whether you’re a former Flatley or still a tentative tapper, why not unleash your inner rhythm and have a go at something new this month? As the class-leader, Stomp and broadway veteran, Mina Liccione, says, "We lead workshops for all ages and all levels rhythm is universal!"
