Sharjah-based volunteer foundation

Cancer SupportIt is a sad fact that as many as one in every three people will be touched by cancer at some point in their lives. The experience of having the disease can be one that is often confusing, frightening, and often lonely. It is with this in mind that Friends of cancer patients was set up in 1999.

The Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FOCP) is a charitable, volunteer-based foundation operating as a specialised entity under the umbrella of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah. Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed AI-Qasimi, President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, and wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Federal Supreme Council Member His Royal Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, a group of dynamic and visionary women formed FOCP with the main aim and shared goal of creating a change in the way the community of the UAE comes together to help those suffering with cancer.

Over the last decade, FOCP has been working tirelessly to fulfil its objective. As well as providing medical support services and assistance to cancer patients, the organisation also strives to increase community awareness, educate people about the causes and prevention of cancer, provide information on the types of treatment and support available to those with the disease and their families, engage the community and foster an environment across the UAE where cancer related issues can be openly and comfortably discussed.

As a charitable organisation, FOCP have been able to provide financial, emotional and medical support to many patients across the UAE. The range of services they offer to the public covers a wide array of accessible options including educational workshops, seminars, clinics, conferences and fund-raising events. As with all charitable organisations, fund-raising plays a huge part in the maintenance and availability of support the charity can provide. This means the charity organises a variety of events to raise funds throughout the year, as well as participating in other events as the featured charity, such as the Oil Barons Ball in Dubai, which last year saw a staggering Dh997,000 being raised for FOCP.

In a community as diverse and multicultural as the one we live in here in Dubai, offering help and support to those who need it is something that should know no boundaries. This is a strong belief held by FOCP also, who are strongly committed to all residents of the UAE without discrimination or prejudice against race, religion or cultural background; the charity's first and foremost aim is to provide guidance and support for cancer patients and their loved ones. After all, that's what friends are for.
