Moving Mountains May Not Be Possible, but Man Has Shifted Many a Heavy Item

It’s always been a dilemma for humans: how do you move a super-heavy object to a new place? Somehow, we always find a way. This 2013 Read. feature counted down the heaviest things ever relocated by man — here are the highlights.

Ahnighito, the Cape York meteorite. A 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid fragment that landed in Greenland. Explorer Robert E. Peary hauled it to the American Museum of Natural History in New York in the 1890s — a job that required building Greenland’s first and only railroad. Its display stand is anchored into the bedrock beneath the museum.
Levitated Mass. A 340-tonne boulder — believed to be the biggest ever moved — traveled 136.8 kilometers on a 176-wheel transporter to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, crawling along closed roads at night for a week and a half to become artist Michael Heizer’s outdoor sculpture.
NASA’s crawler-transporters. Moving the 363-foot, 3,100-tonne Saturn V rocket took a 2,750-tonne tracked vehicle — the largest ever built — creeping down a special road surfaced with Tennessee river rock to cut friction.
The regional record-holder. In January 2012, logistics firm Al-Majdouie trucked a 4,891-tonne desalination evaporator — the length of a football field — to a plant in Saudi Arabia on a rig with 172 axles and 688 tyres: the biggest road cargo ever moved in the Middle East.
The heaviest of all: Troll A. Norway’s offshore gas platform weighs about 1.2 million tonnes and stands 1,548 feet tall. Ten tugboats towed it 280 kilometers out to sea at roughly one knot — seven days of the slowest convoy in history, and still the largest object humans have ever transported.
Honorable mentions. Canadian minister-strongman Rev. Kevin Fast pulling a 63.1-tonne truck by hand; the 4,800-tonne Hotel Montgomery rolled 186 feet across San Jose; and the Titanic’s 1911 launch — 26,000 tonnes eased down a Belfast slipway on 22 tonnes of tallow and soap.

Moving heavy things in Dubai: the practical version

Your wardrobe is not the Troll A platform, but the principles scale down. If you’re moving heavy furniture or appliances within Dubai:

Book your building first, then the movers. Most Dubai towers require a move-in/move-out permit from building management and restrict moves to set hours. Sort the paperwork before you sign with a moving company.
Measure the service elevator, not just the sofa. Many a wardrobe has died in a stairwell. If it doesn’t fit, professional movers can often disassemble furniture — agree on that (and reassembly) in writing beforehand.
Respect the summer. From roughly May to September, schedule heavy lifting for early morning, hydrate the crew, and never leave electronics or anything with batteries sitting in a parked truck through the afternoon heat.
Get quotes that itemize. A serious mover will visit or video-survey your home and quote per item and floor, including permits and packing materials — a single round number over the phone usually grows on moving day.
