We already know that tea can do wonders for our skin and help keep us trim, but did you know that it also does amazing things to our health?

Tea has been drunk for hangover prevention to weight control and common cold reduction through the centuries. Now, modern scientific research has given us a much better insight into how tea improves our health.

True tea, or that from the Camellia sinensis plant, includes white, green, oolong, black and pu-erh. All of them contain antioxidants, catechins, and polyphenols, which positively impact our bodies. And here’s what research shows.

It lowers cholesterol

Studies proved that green tea helps lower cholesterol. It is believed to work by preventing the absorption of cholesterol from the large intestine. Sources suggest five cups per day will show results, as it is believed that higher consumption leads to a bigger drop in cholesterol. In China, the pu-erh tea is the most renowned in its ability to lower cholesterol, although research has yet to prove this traditional belief.

It prevents blindness

Since tea contains high levels of antioxidants, it is not surprising that studies have found them in eye tissue. As a matter of fact, in a 2001 study, drinking tea showed that it can help prevent blindness caused by cataracts (the clouding of the lens inside the eye).

It relieves inflammation

Active compounds found in tea can also help lower levels of inflammation and inflammatory reactions.  Inflammation is connected to the most common modern ailments such as arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and depression. It can also cause water retention which in turn makes you look puffy, so a few cups of tea can certainly benefit your health and help you look and feel thinner.

It helps reduce stress

Drinking tea helps reduce Cortisol, a stress hormone that contributes to belly fat and premature skin ageing. A recent study suggests four cups of tea per day helps your cortisol levels spike less. If you’ve gone through something stressful, consuming tea daily for six weeks will help your Cortisol levels drop faster.

It improves memory, focus and concentration

The combination of caffeine and L-Theanine, a naturally-occurring amino acid found in tea is said to improve reaction time and memory while increasing focus and concentration. If you need to be sharp for a meeting or focused on an exam, a cup of tea, preferably white tea will help boost your concentration and focus.

It decreases the risk of stroke

Research proves that drinking at least three cups of green or black tea per day resulted in a 21% reduction in the risk of ischemic stroke. Protect yourself earlier and start your tea habit now.

It reduces the risk of developing dementia

Drink tea so you can stay sharp as you age, it is believed to lower the risk of dementia by acting through multiple pathways, including those of nerve synapses and blood sugar regulation. A 2011 study also found that tea affects the brain theta waves to improve memory and increase attention span — which is yet another reason to start drinking tea while you’re young.
